Bay to Bars: Amazon Watch Climber Reflects on Yesterday’s Daring Action

May 24, 2011 | Thomas Cavanagh | Eye on the Amazon

Daring activists from Amazon Watch and Rainforest Action Network rappelled from the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to hang a 50-foot banner demanding justice for Chevron's crimes in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

I was released from County Jail early this morning with my “compañeros in activism”.

Yesterday, I joined an action team from Rainforest Action Network as an Amazon Watch representative and hung a banner from the Richmond – San Rafael Bridge.

Hanging midway between steel and water we unfurled a 50′ banner that read loud and clear: Chevron is Guilty, Clean up the Amazon.

Climbing between bridge, sail and bay, we broadcasted our message to a wide spectrum of watching media and also to the Chevron executives, board members, employees and shareholders preparing for their annual meeting this Wednesday.

It is a liberating feeling to be able to take action and voice ones solidarity with the 30,000 Ecuadorians living in the toxic legacy of what Chevron deliberately dumped in the Amazon.

It is a privilege and indeed my duty to stand with those who suffer at the hands of Chevron, the California company notorious for it’s global and local toxicity.

It is time for all to stand up, take action, and hold this company accountable.

I would gladly spend a night in jail again if it means more will amplify this message across the globe and into the heart of compassion.

ABC covers the banner hang and the arrest here.

In Solidarity,
